James Krauss
After having spent the last thirty years working on a grand scale, i.e. six feet by nine-foot canvases, in 1995 I switched from working extremely large and on canvas to extremely small on paper.
Using a combined media approach of watercolor and Titanium white acrylic on 300-pound Arches cold pressed watercolor paper, my work has evolved int what you see now. While color and expressive paint handling remain my primary interests, the use of paper and watercolor, along with the more intimate scale has allowed me to focus on more subtle nuances and poetic moods.
In many cases the expressionistic whites function as a door or window, framing a glimpse of reality...a painting within a painting. Most recently I have been working on a series of abstract black and white paintings using only graphite and Titanium white acrylic on paper.
