Benita Brewer is a visual artist residing outside Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in northern Indiana, earned a BFA from Indiana University and a MFA from University of Cincinnati. She worked in graphic and web design for twelve years and then taught at Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne as an assistant Professor in visual design and multimedia. During this time, she was awarded an Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artists' Grant and a Purdue University Faculty Research grant. Benita relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she participated in the Creative Capital Development Program sponsored by the NEA and Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. She was also a member Oklahoma Arts Leadership program which focused on art projects that help community revitalization, education, and overall quality of life.
In 2015, she moved to Chicago to be closer to family. Benita is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, past Membership Chair of the Transparent Watercolor Society of American (TWSA) and past Executive Director of the Illinois Watercolor Society (IWS).
Painting for Benita is a form of storytelling. Her ideas often start with a personal connection with an object. It is the spark used for a painting that reflects the essence of the memory but becomes more abstract and universal. The story may be hers, but hopefully, viewers connect and interpret the image from their own life experience.
