Savas Arazbey
I am a mosaic artist from Turkey "The Cradle of history and mosaic art of this country".
Since my youth in Lonia, the ancient region of coastal Anatolia, glass art inspired my outlook. While practicing as a Pharmacist for 40 years and examining mosaic patterns, reading Rumi and fellow poets allowed a vision to harmonize love, giving life to glass or any medium. The aided the revival of an antique art from which originally blossomed in Zeugma and Antioch... In the year 1997, l settled in Naperville and started creating my own artwork with intent of sharing it my community. It would be my pleasure to continue sharing my expertise to broaden the mosaic community.... |

The creative switch is always on." Tony paints exclusively with watercolor in the pure transparent tradition. William Blake
As an artist and educator, my practice and teaching revolve around solid foundational techniques, the encouragement of research, and challenging students to view subjects through multiple lenses. Having benefited from the personalized instruction of my undergraduate education, I aim to work with my students individually to best assess and mentor their progress. I teach across artistic disciplines and have a love for painting and drawing.
For each class exercise, I give an in-class demonstration as well as an emailed PDF with step-by-step instructions and online links to video demonstrations for out of class reference. Students with more experience in particular techniques may only need a brief refresher or bulleted set of instructions to begin delving into work, while others require more time to process the information. To help ensure that my time is balanced amongst all of my student during class hours, as well as maintain progress within our course work, these extra online resources provide opportunities for students to revisit instructions and ideas as they practice independently. I strive to make my personal demonstrations both engaging and instructional as a way to energize my students to pick up their own brushes and begin working that day. It is important to me to create an atmosphere of openness and enthusiasm in the classroom. My goal for my students is for them to become the artist they wish to be and to leave class with the confidence in knowing they have foundational artistic skills. To do this, instruction should become more personalized as we gain rapport with each other as artists. I set regular individual meetings where we create goals, have informal evaluations, and expose them to other artists and thinkers. As a student, I valued instructors who were not only helping me threw instruction but were honest, accessible, and interested in my work. I want to learn from my students. I’m excited to hear what makes them create and to understand their process. By gaining an understanding of the students, I remain open to letting my teaching evolve as the class progresses. |

Sherry DeFillippo
Sherry DeFillippo has been in love with the creative process for as long as she can remember. She has a BS degree in elementary education and a BS and MS degree in Art Education from Augustana College and Northern Illinois University. Although art has been part of her life since childhood, her love of painting didn’t blossom until about 18 years ago. While hiring instructors to teach classes at Michael’s, a woman came in with a box of items painted in the most lovely, decorative style she had ever seen, and she was hooked!
Sherry’s favorite student is the beginner. Teaching the basics and watching someone’s love of painting develop is a true joy. Pablo Picasso said it best, “Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist.” Sherry teaches the basics, one step at a time, then lets the artist inside you break out and experience the joy of painting. You will learn to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary, in a supportive and encouraging environment. Sherry has been a member of The Society of Decorative Painters and the Illinois Prairie Painters since 1994 and takes classes as often as she can. She believes that it’s important to have things to your life that spark joy, and that’s what decorative painting has done for her. Take a class and find out why! |

Cherylyn Gnadt
|
On a constant quest for balance as an artist, instructor, marketing professional and Mom, she carves out creative time - sometimes quite literally. The meditative quality in carving a block of wood or building up layers of collage, paint, metal and ephemera – waiting, reflecting, then working some more – allows for luminosity and serendipity essential to her process. Her current work is primarily figurative, incorporating nature – revealing surrealistic themes of domesticity, isolation, adaptability and perseverance.
Cherylyn teaches printmaking, mixed media and metal workshops and is a certified Precious Metal Clay Instructor. She also has experience as an artist facilitator for special needs adults. Her passion is creating relatable art experiences that aim to better lives and communities – collaborations, public art, teaching, artist talks, and mentoring. Her traditional art background originates from the American Academy of Art (1992) and earned her Communications degree from Elmhurst College with a minor in Fine Art (2017). |

"My goal is to help you become a better photographer using your phone, point and shoot, and/or sophisticated cameras. We'll keep it simple!"
As a photographic artist, there is more to creating a piece of photographic art than just snapping a picture. As any artist does, I use composition, color, lighting and subject matter. And now with digital tools, I am able to create compositions that were not previously possible. It is an exciting and challenging time. Growing up in the small town of Lititz, Pennsylvania, I had paper routes. (Yes we delivered newspapers to homes "back in the day" using my bicycle). With my meager earnings I bought my first Brownie camera at age 15. That started a life-long passion with photography. In the late 1980's, I quit the corporate world to become a full time photographer with a portrait studio in my home in Naperville, and later in New Mexico. I specialize in story telling large canvas wall portraits of children and families. The best and most successful job I ever had! My favorite and most significant mentor who became a friend, was Jay Stock, a renown world class photographer. Also, I studied with numerous other accomplished photographers and attended many seminars. And read a ton of photography books! Being able to share what I have learned is a real blessing. I've had the pleasure of mentoring several young people who have become professional photographers. In addition to photography, I have been a USAF jet pilot and civilian flight instructor. Currently, I teach tennis privately and assist in coaching Naperville North High School tennis teams. Let's have some fun creating good photographs! |
