The goal of this course is to gain an understanding of how to render and assign color to surface contours of the body with drawing and painting media. During the first half of each class, students are instructed about specific anatomical portions, then gain experience from drawing and painting the live figure for both short and extended poses. The emphasis is for each student to reproduce short demonstrations lead by the instructor and apply those techniques while observing the model, including how to build skin tones and its interaction with colored light and performative aspects of bodily movement. Students are also encouraged to continue or begin a self-designed project that focuses on exploring the finer techniques of figuration. They will develop an ability to visualize the model in order to comprehend the interface between seeing and expressive replication, determined by a variety of contemporary drawing strategies. While previous drawing or painting experience is preferred, any enthusiastic student is welcome. Extracurricular practice and preparation is highly recommended so that class time is effectively utilized. In addition to demonstrations and guided work time, classes are structured for open questions, discussion, and critiques. Painting experience preferred. There is an additional model fee (assessed depending on class size).
